ME 5118 - FLUID ENERGY CONVERSION

SYLLABUS - 5th SEMESTER - SCRA

TOPIC CONTENTS
Hydraulic Turbines euler's equation, impulse and reaction turbines, pelton; francis and kaplan turbines, bulb turbines, velocity triangles; power and efficiency calculation, constructional details and general hydraulic design, draft tubes, performance characteristics and governing of turbines.
Pumps reciprocating pump:-theory of indicator diagram, slip effect of friction and acceleration, air vessels; centrifugal pumps:-classification, vector diagram, heads, power and efficiency calculation, blade profiles, starting speed, cavitation; performance characteristics:-gear pump, jet pump, screw pump, vane pump.
Fluid coupling and Torque converter theory, characteristics and uses.
Selection of Turbine and Pumps model testing of turbines and pump, principle of similarity, specific quantities, unit quantities.
Boundary Layer Theory boundary layer equation, boundary layer growth over a flat plate, boundary layer thickness. laminar and turbulent boundary layers. momentum integral equations and its solutions. separation of boundary layer and its control.
